Panama City, February 2019 – The Grupo de Empresas (GdE) consortium of Alstom (lead contractor), Thales, Sofratesa, CIM and TSO have delivered the integrated rail system for Line 2 of the Panama City metro in the record time of 40 months, and opened the first section of the line to passengers on World Youth Day.

The integrated railway system includes the track systems, 44 km of concrete track base, 50 km of mainly rigid catenaries, workshop facilities, telecoms infrastructures and central control systems. At 21 km in length, Line 2 will serve 16 stations, intersect with Line 1, and have sufficient capacity to carry up to 40,000 passengers per hour in both directions. The member companies of the GdE consortium have been on site in Panama since work began on the Line 1 project in 2010, and continue to play a key role in developing the country’s urban transport infrastructure.
