Management of old sleepers "Créosotées" of RFF

In France, the three main users of wood treated with creosote or salts of copper, chromium, arsenic (CCA), against wood rot are:

RFF (Réseau Ferré de France), France Telecom and ERDF (Electricité Réseau Distribution France, a subsidiary of EDF).

These woods are used for infrastructure networks of these operators. The use and adaptation of these networks require the removal rate of about 80 000 tons of wood that usually after many years, no longer possess the desired characteristics initially.

Of the one million sleepers filed annually by the SNCF :

500,000 sleepers are intended to be sold for reuse by industrialists, professionals or individuals

250,000 sleepers are incinerated in a classified installation for the Environment (ICPE) authorized to manufacture charcoal food

The rest is directly re-used on secondary lines

As part of one of the Grenelle of the environment, it was decided to improve the management of some specific waste, including treated wood. In this regard, the ministry in charge of sustainable development has led a working group from February 2008 to May 2010 including the participation of representatives of RFF and SNCF.

This work helped lead to the signature 15 July 2010, a voluntary charter on the reuse and disposal of posts and treated wood ties, between the Secretary of State for the Ecology, RFF, France Telecom, ERDF, the FNCCR (local public services in energy, water and environment) and Robin Hood (general Association of protection of man and the environment).
